The Vampire Diaries Season 5, Episode 20 (“What Lies Beneath”)
It’s the cabin episode! Every teen show has at some point a weekend get-a-way episode where couples/or potential couples are holed up in a cabin and things go wrong. In this one we have two potential couples, Damon and Elena are already flirting with getting back together and Caroline is definitely into Stefan, even if she doesn’t realize it yet. The four of them head to Caroline’s dad’s cabin to hide Stefan and Elena from the Travelers. It is bound to be awkward with the status of Damon and Elena, Stefan and Elena hiding what happened to Enzo from Damon, and Caroline is concerned that Stefan and Elena might be getting back together. Of course none of that is as important as the fact that Enzo almost kills them from the Other Side.
The whole episode Elena and Stefan are being very obvious that they are hiding something. Caroline thinks they are secretly hooking up and Damon thinks it is something to do with Enzo. I was very happy that he didn’t even consider the idea that Stefan and Elena would be getting back together. He isn’t concerned that it is going to happen just because he and Elena are broken up. He is much more secure about it now and trusts that neither of them would do that to him. When Enzo starts messing with them from the Other Side, Elena can’t keep the secret anymore and tells Damon. He fights against his instincts to get mad and go off the rails because that is what everyone is afraid that he will do. He is trying to be better so that he and Elena can be together again. It is a major test for his character and he surprisingly doesn’t react in the typical Damon way. He tells Stefan that he understands why he did it, but not why he hid it. Even so he forgives Stefan (after punching him) and promises to not hold the grudge.
The Other Side is continuing to fall apart causing less separation between the two sides. Both Enzo and Bonnie’s grandmother are able to touch and move things on the living side, even though they are still on the dead side. Enzo uses this to continue his revenge plan by attempting to drown Elena and then almost killing Luke and the Salvatores. Damon promises to find Enzo a way back to the land of the living because he still feels like he owes him. Even though Markos coming back is what is causing it to start collapsing and Bonnie will likely die along with it, though still no one knows that besides Bonnie. Will more people be swept away like Vicki? Will they all die if they are still over there? Or will some be able to use this to come back? Will Bonnie be able to find a work around to save herself? The final two episodes of the season will answer all of those questions.
This was a very fun episode even if it was a bit light on substance. I enjoy anytime we get to see the characters just hanging out, even if it is only for a single scene. The group at the cabin playing charades and a very pointed game of Never Have I Ever was fun. It was also great to see Matt and Jeremy be the ones tying someone up and torturing them for information. The last two episodes of the season are pretty packed and I am very excited to get into them. The fate of the Other Side will be revealed and some major plot twists are coming. In this episode we meet Julian’s lady friend, Maria, who burns Julian’s real body so that he will be permanently passengered inside Tyler. What does that mean for Tyler? The only way to get Tyler back now is to use the magic Traveler’s knife that Markos destroyed. It’ll take another crazy magic loophole to get him back now. The episode ends with Elena (and possibly Stefan) getting taken by the Travelers who want their blood so they can rid Mystic Falls of magic, if they succeed that will be pretty devastating for all the vampires, witches, and werewolves of the show.
Episode Grade: 7.5/10
- Tyler wakes up to Maria trying to have sex with him because she thinks that Julian is the active one. She is not too upset about the body swap but she looks like an adult and Tyler is supposed to be like 17 so its a bit weird. But this is Vampire Diaries where age is subjective.
- Damon: “You and I and our ex-girlfriend are going to go on a little secret trip”
- The supernatural drama cannot stop for Bonnie and Jeremy to have one romantic weekend together.
- Caroline uses the term “team Stelena” and I hate it – I am not a fan of TV couple names.
- Why did they team up Stefan/Elena and Damon/Caroline? Damon and Caroline hate each other and clearly suck at charades. Why not boys vs girls?
- Body Count: None!
